​Bringing gold home was no luck at all, but hard work and dedication by St Columban's College, Caboolture student, Lucky Patterson.
 
After spending 10 days in a Manchester staging camp with the Australian team, Lucky headed to the 2015 IPC World Open Swimming Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.  This would lead to Lucky winning gold, two silver and two bronze positions which places her for five events at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
 
Lucky said that the support for her had been tremendous and drove her to further competitive success.  "The St Columban's College community, including teachers and friends have been so encouraging," Lucky said.
 
This support led to Lucky's first race at the recent IPC event seeing her achieve a personal best and placing third up against 380 competitors from around the world.
 
Then Lucky backed it up with gold after placing first in a 4x100 metre freestyle relay.  The next day saw Lucky blitz the heats through to the finals that evening, gaining a bronze for third in the world at a time of 5:03:19.
 
On day four, Lucky competed in the 100 metre backstroke, placing well from the heats into the final with a three second PB at a time of 1:24:08 - placing fifth in the World.
 
And on day five, Lucky smashed out a 50 metre freestyle heats, placing her into the finals. This was said to be an incredibly fast race with so much splashing you couldn't see who won. This, with just 300th of a second difference - Lucky gained silver with the title: "Second in the world."
 
To top the evening off on the last day, Lucky competed in a 4x100 metre medley relay. Lucky's mother said her daughter was the star of the race "Lucky anchored the race - being the one to bring the team home," Sherryn Patterson said. "With a huge PB, Lucky hit the wall breaking an Oceania record and gaining silver for her team."
