We were thrilled to receive this award of the “Tin Man” recycled Art Piece and the prize $2500. This was awarded by Acting Mayor, Councillor Mike Charlton, who visited us this week.
It is the end of a successful year for our leading College Environment Committee. We have won a variety of community awards that merit particular mention. Most recent was the Moreton Bay Regional Council Recycling Award; this award was significant as it was a small snap shot of the Committee’s endeavors over the year captured in a short movie context.
The main focus was to showcase our commitment to cleaning the Duncan Street drain that runs parallel to the College, ultimately to deter College waste reaching Moreton Bay and preserving marine life within it. The College was successful in its entry securing a $2,500 prize that will allow the Committee to continue the efforts of creating a sustainable environmental future here at the College.
As well as this achievement, we were successful in obtaining a grant from the Keep Australia Beautiful Container Recycling Community Organisation, funded by Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola South Pacific, to complete our recycling and educational infrastructure, to the amount of $5,000. Again, this will allow us to further our recycling resources by producing some educational signage for the Duncan Street drain and supply every classroom in the College with recycling and general waste colour coded bins.
The College would like to congratulate and extend a huge thank you to The Environment Committee and the College community for their support of the ‘donate a tree’ initiative. With hundreds of donations from families, we have now collected and planted the native trees throughout the College in strategic positions. The most noticeable location is out the front of the Mary McKillop Performance Centre, where a total of eighty plants were placed collectively next to the student pick up area. This area will develop over the years as an exceptional example of community spirit, showcasing not only the generosity of our College community but the native fauna obtained as a result of the Environment Committees 2014 endeavors.
